Kristin Garletts named 2027 New Mexico Teacher of the Year
National Board-certified English and journalism teacher recognized for student-centered instruction, leadership and service

SANTA FE – The New Mexico Public Education Department today announced Kristin Garletts, an English language arts and journalism teacher at Volcano Vista High School in Albuquerque Public Schools (APS), as the 2027 New Mexico Teacher of the Year.

The honor was announced during a school assembly celebrating Garletts and the educators serving students at Volcano Vista, throughout APS and across New Mexico.

"Kristin Garletts represents the very best of New Mexico's educators: accomplished, innovative and deeply committed to every student she serves," said Public Education Secretary Mariana D. Padilla. "She helps students find their voices, supports her colleagues and leads with humility and service. We are proud that she will represent New Mexico's teachers in 2027."

Garletts currently teaches ninth-grade English language arts and journalism at Volcano Vista High School, where she creates learning experiences grounded in high expectations, authentic work and strong relationships. She supports multilingual learners and students with disabilities, teaches students to write analytical and creative pieces, and guides student journalists as they develop and publish their work.

Her influence extends beyond the classroom. Garletts is recognized as a technology leader on campus and is a trusted resource for educators exploring instructional tools, integrating digital resources and solving technology challenges. She has led professional development, coached teachers and provided individual support that strengthens instruction across the school.

"Kristin is the type of remarkable educator who has influenced and continues to influence students beyond the classroom through her innovative teaching and steadfast commitment to student success," said Volcano Vista High School Principal Melissa Sedillo. "Her leadership is characterized by humility and service, and she empowers both students and educators to become confident, creative and lifelong learners."

During her 20-year career, Garletts has served as an English and English language development teacher, librarian, literacy mentor, program coordinator, professional learning community leader and technology support specialist. She is a National Board Certified Teacher and holds New Mexico endorsements in language arts, reading, teaching English to speakers of other languages and library media sciences.

Garletts earned a bachelor's degree in English education from Northern Arizona University, graduating summa cum laude. Her record of continuous professional learning includes certifications and training in instructional technology, literacy, differentiation, journalism and support for English learners.

The New Mexico Oil and Gas Association sponsors the New Mexico Teacher of the Year program, supporting travel needs and professional development opportunities for the award winner.

"Kristin demonstrates the lasting impact a great teacher can have by helping students discover their voices, build confidence and see new possibilities for their futures," said Missi Currier, president and CEO of the New Mexico Oil and Gas Association. “NMOGA is proud to support the New Mexico Teacher of the Year program and to celebrate an educator whose leadership, innovation and service strengthen her school and our entire state.”

Established in 1963, the New Mexico Teacher of the Year program invites all school districts and charter schools to nominate outstanding educators annually. The award honors teachers who exemplify excellence in the classroom and leadership in the profession.
