Volusia County Readies School Zone Traffic Control Devices Ahead of Students’ Return

As students prepare to return to classrooms next week, Volusia County Road and Bridge traffic signal maintenance crews are working behind the scenes to prepare the school zone traffic control devices that help keep thousands of students safe each school day.

In the weeks leading up to the start of the school year, crews inspect, program and maintain school zone flashers, beacons, and traffic signals to verify they are operating properly and activating at the correct times for each school’s schedule. These devices alert motorists when reduced school zone speed limits are in effect, and help improve safety for students, parents, school staff, and other pedestrians traveling near schools.

Crews also continue monitoring and servicing school zone equipment throughout the school year as schedules change, repairs become necessary, or improvements are identified.

Preparing school zones is only one part of creating a safe environment for students. Volusia County encourages motorists to remain attentive, eliminate distractions, obey school zone speed limits and watch for children walking, bicycling, or riding scooters and e-bikes to and from school.
