Man Charged After Armed Attempted Breach at White House Event
The incident occurred on Saturday during the White House Correspondents’ Dinner, where Allen allegedly tried to bypass security. Prosecutors said he was carrying multiple weapons at the time of his arrest, including a shotgun, a semi-automatic handgun, and several knives, as presented in court by Assistant US Attorney Jocelyn Ballantine.
He now faces multiple federal charges, including attempted assassination of the president, interstate transport of weapons, and use of a firearm during a violent crime. The accused did not enter a plea during the initial hearing.
A federal judge ordered that Allen remain in custody while proceedings continue. A further hearing is scheduled for Thursday to determine whether he may be eligible for pretrial release, with a preliminary hearing set for May 11.
Despite the severity of the charges, US officials emphasized that the suspect never came close to the president. US Attorney General Todd Blanche stated that Allen was reportedly located on a different floor from the main event space, with multiple layers of federal security between him and the president.
Authorities also noted that parts of the investigation remain ongoing, including unclear details about an incident in which a Secret Service agent was reportedly shot during the event. Officials declined to provide further information, saying evidence is still being reviewed.
