Iran Student Protests Rage On for Third Straight Day

(MENAFN) Anti-government demonstrations swept through universities in Tehran and Isfahan for a third straight day on Monday, as an Iranian lawmaker escalated pressure on the country's science minister over the unrest.

Students took to the grounds of Tehran's University of Science and Culture, Amirkabir University, the University of Tehran, and Sharif University of Technology, while demonstrations also erupted at Isfahan University of Technology, Iranian media reported. Protesters voiced anti-government chants, with sporadic clashes erupting between students of opposing political and ideological leanings.

The wave of campus unrest drew a sharp political response in parliament, where Iranian MP Amir-Hossein Sabeti warned of moves to hold Science, Research, and Technology Minister Hossein Simaei Sarraf accountable. Addressing the Islamic Consultative Assembly, Sabeti attributed the turmoil — including anti-government chanting and the burning of the Iranian flag — to what he called the "government's misguided policies."

He leveled direct criticism at President Masoud Pezeshkian and Minister Sarraf, accusing both of "leniency toward influential factions." Should order on campuses fail to be restored, Sabeti warned, legislators would summon Sarraf for formal parliamentary questioning and launch impeachment proceedings against him.

The current unrest follows a wave of nationwide protests in late December that persisted for nearly two weeks, ignited by a steep collapse in Iran's currency and a widening economic crisis. Those demonstrations originated in Tehran before rippling outward to multiple cities. President Pezeshkian publicly acknowledged the population's frustration at the time and vowed to pursue improvements.
